The feature video produced for the 2018 MedSchool Gala documents four life saving patient cases which bring to the viewer: state of the art medicine; extraordinary compassion in care; and, research innovations – all made possible because of the School of Medicine faculty.
The Power of Passion: The Shock Trauma Miracle
When German Lopez arrives at Shock Trauma, Dr. Scalea and Dr. Kundi both agree that he is essentially dead, his body pulverized by the impact of a car crash. Says Dr. Kundi , “He came in dead and in 99 % of the hospitals in the world, he would stay dead.” Rushed to the OR, Drs. Scalea, McCunn, Nascone and Kundi, are the beginning of the Shock Trauma miracle that makes the impossible save.
The Power of Passion: Broken Hearts
In college, Ashley finds out that she has a life threatening genetic heart condition. Requiring on-going medical interventions, Dr. Stacy Fisher, her cardiologist becomes her life line. Ashley says, “ She’s more than a doctor. She’s a friend. She’s a counselor in the sense that she’s available to me whenever I need her.”
The Power of Passion: Surviving MedSchool
When Don and Melanie got engaged in Medical School, they had no idea a life threatening disease would challenge their dreams of marriage and medicine. When chemo is not successful treating Don’s cancer, he becomes Dr. Rapoport’s patient. “We were going to give him a thousand percent of our effort to ensure his treatment would be successful,” says Dr. Rapoport. Dr. Parker, the Dean of Students, becomes the second hero in Dan’s life. While Dr. Rapoport keeps him alive, Dr. Parker makes sure his dream of finishing medical school is possible.
The Power of Passion: The Puzzle of Josh
Throughout Josh’s childhood, his illnesses have puzzled doctors. When his condition suddenly deteriorates, a team of loving doctors at the University of Maryland School of Medicine including Drs. York, Blanchard, Macatangay, and Lumpkin find the solutions to his puzzle and give him the gift of life. “It’s changed my life drastically,” says Josh. “It made me realize the importance of life. It made me realize that life is very valuable and you only live once.”
The Power of My Passion
The opening video for the 2918 gala shares the passion for medicine within the School of Medicine with opening comments from E. Albert Reece, MD, PhD, MBA, the Dean; and, from: faculty; administrators; medical school students; and, students in the MD/PhD program and PhD program. The passion expressed for education, clinical care and research reveals the amazing personal dedication inherent to the culture of excellence at the School of Medicine.
